FIN-CLARIN Upgrade

Funding source: Academy of Finland

Project duration: 1.1.2017 – 31.12.2019

Project website: FIN-CLARIN Upgrade

What we are doing:

The FIN-CLARIN research infrastructure provides researchers analysis tools and access to a wide collection of digital language resources centralized through the Language Bank. The project entitled FIN-CLARIN Upgrade will continue the Language Bank development and make CSC's supercomputing capacity easier to use for researchers.

– FIN-CLARIN helps researchers in Finland to use, to refine, to preserve and to share their language resources. The Language Bank of Finland is the collection of services that provides the language materials and tools for the research community, says Tero Aalto, Application Specialist at CSC.

Hosting the Language Bank of Finland at CSC has created synergies and continues to do so. CSC has and will continue to benefit from knowledge sharing within CLARIN in areas like authentication and authorization.

A new application titled Mylly will make access to CSC's high-performance computing (HPC) environment easier for language researchers and other digital humanists. Service development is re-using CSC's existing Chipster technology, originally developed for bioinformatics research.

– With its graphical user interface and underlying scripts, Mylly is more complex than pure web based tools like Korp, but less complex than the job scheduling system on the Taito supercluster, adds Martin Matthiesen, Senior Application Specialist at CSC.

CLARIN ERIC is a research infrastructure that brings together language resources from all over Europe. CLARIN ERIC is the perhaps most comprehensive and ambitious international effort so far to provide a unified framework for making both really big amounts of diverse language data and relevant analysis tools easily and freely accessible to both the research community and to industry. Finland is represented in the federation by the FIN-CLARIN consortium that consists of a group of Finnish universities along with CSC – IT Center for Science and the Institute for the Languages of Finland.
