PRACE Autumn School familiarised international students and postdoctoral researchers with modern GPU-accelerated supercomputers
The PRACE Autumn School 2021 brought together undergraduate and graduate students as well as postdoctoral researchers in different disciplines. One of the highlights of the school was the visit to CSC’s data center in Kajaani, the home of one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world: LUMI. It was a unique opportunity for the participants to familiarise themselves with the cutting-edge data infrastructure in the field of HPC.

Oppimisanalytiikan viitekehys auttaa hyödyntämään dataa oppimisen tukena
Oppimisessa ja koulutuksessa käytetään useita sähköisiä alustoja. Näitä ovat esimerkiksi digitaaliset oppimateriaalit, oppimisalustat, simulaatiot ja muut sähköiset työkalut. Kun opiskelijat käyttävät näitä alustoja, he jättävät toiminnastaan verkossa jälkiä. Oppimisanalytiikka tarkoittaa digitaalisten jälkien keräämistä, analysointia ja raportointia.

Jakso 5: Luunkova kaksikko – Disior ja Elmer
Mitä yhteistä on insinööreillä ja käsikirurgeilla? No ainakin se, että molemmilla on mahdollisuus käyttää työssään matemaattista mallintamista. Insinööreille se on ollut arkipäivää vuosikymmeniä, mutta kasvuyritys Disior tekee kliinisen lääketieteen alalla mallintamisen pioneerityötä CSC:n Elmerin avustamana. Tulevaisuudessa tätä teknologiaa käyttävät kaikki lääkärit, ennustaa Disiorin Sakari Soini. Jakso 4: Vihreä ICT, vihreämpi tulevaisuus
Kun CSC päätti sijoittaa kansalliset supertietokoneet Kajaaniin, oli alusta asti selvää, että tavoitteena on rakentaa maailman vihrein ja modernein konesaliympäristö. Tavoitteeseen on päästy, sillä CSC:n Kajaanin datakeskus on yksi maailman ekotehokkaimmista, vaikka siellä toimii yksi maailman tehokkaimmista supertietokoneista, LUMI. Jakso 3: Data, sinä olet tähti
Kun Aalto-yliopiston Metsähovin radio-observatorion johtaja Joni Tammi kollegoineen ryhtyy hommiin, syntyy tähtitieteellinen määrä kohinaa, suhinaa ja välähdyksiä. Radio-observatorio kerää avaruudesta dataa mm. auringonpurkauksista ja mustista aukoista. Oikein käsitelty data auttaa maailman tähtitieteilijöiden lisäksi myös muiden tieteenalojen toimijoita nyt ja tulevaisuudessa. Pitkien aikasarjojen kerääminen ja säilyttäminen vaatii datan huolellisen käsittelyn lisäksi hyvää suunnittelua. Jakso 2: Lifeplan – maapallon luontokadon pysäyttämiseksi
Arviolta 80 % kaikista maapallon eliölajeista odottaa löytämistä. Lajeja on niin paljon, ettei niitä ehditä löytämään perinteisin menetelmin ja suuri osa ehtisi jopa hävitä. Tässä teknologia ja CSC tulee avuksi. Lifeplan-hanke mittaa luonnon monimuotoisuuden muutosta automatisoidun tiedonkeruun, koneoppimismenetelmien ja mallintamisen avulla. Case Trafotek, SEMTEC project: CSC involved in developing modelling tools for industrial needs
Together with CSC, VTT, three universities and six companies from the electromechanical industry, Trafotek Oy participated in the SEMTEC project, whose mandate was to develop simulation tools for electromechanical problems. The project was carried out in close cooperation with research institutes and companies.

Case Disior: code optimization support from CSC
Disior Ltd. is a Finnish start-up software company which develops computational software for treating bone fractures. Disior was one of the companies that was granted resources in the European high-performance computing infrastructure PRACE (the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe) in its call for applications under the SHAPE program (SME HPC Adoption Programme for Europe) in autumn 2017.
