LUMI, one of the EuroHPC world-class supercomputers and leading platforms for artificial intelligence, will be located at CSC’s data center in Kajaani, Finland. Operations started in 2021, and LUMI will reach its full capacity in 2022 when the second installation phase will take place. The supercomputer will be hosted by the LUMI consortium including ten European countries.
The budget for the EuroHPC JU in 2019–2020 is over 960 million Euros, which includes public investments from the EU and participating states as well as investments from private partners. The total budget of the EuroHPC pre-exascale system in CSC’s data center in Kajaani is over 202 million Euros. Half of this funding comes from the EU and the other half from the consortium countries.
LUMI high performance computing services offer companies a competitive advantage
Companies can make extensive use of high-performance computing (HPC) as part of product development and innovation activities. Up to 20% of the LUMI supercomputer’s capacity has been reserved for companies.

LUMI funding & received awards
LUMI has received additional funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) which is granted by Regional Council of Kainuu. ERDF funding for 4.2 million Euros is granted for the period of 10.06.2019-31.12.2020. This funding enables EuroHPC's supercomputer to be located at CSC's Kajaani data center, strengthening the national and international status of Kainuu’s ICT and data center services.
LUMI received two global awards in late 2021: HPCwire's Editors' Choice Award for Best Sustainability Innovation in HPC, and DCD Awards' Data Center Design Innovation Award. In 2022 LUMI was awarded for the Innovative Project of the Year category at the Electrical Review and Data Centre Review Excellence Awards 2022!
Promoting the European Green Deal
LUMI is built on world-class environmental sustainability and cost-efficiency. It helps the European ICT sector become greener and more cost-efficient, which is necessary to reach the EU’s ambitious climate targets and pave the way for the green transition.
With the smallest possible environmental burden and lowest cost for European taxpayers, LUMI is beyond compare.
What has been said about LUMI:
"Today we mark an important step forward in the realisation of the European High-Performance Computing strategy. The pre-exascale supercomputer hosted by the LUMI consortium will be among the top 5 in the world. Together with the other EuroHPC pre-exascale and petascale supercomputers that will be deployed in 2021, LUMI supercomputer will help Europe’s public and private users address many daunting research and innovation problems across different areas from weather and climate change through cybersecurity to drug discovery and personalised medicine. LUMI supercomputer aligns the Digital and Green Deal policies of the European Commission, using 100% renewable carbon neutral energy. Moreover, the heat generated will provide 20 percent of the district heat of the area, being one of the most efficient supercomputers in the world"
Khalil Rouhana, Deputy Director-General of the Directorate‑General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG Connect) of the European Commission
"Once operational in mid-2021, the LUMI supercomputer will be one of the most competitive and green supercomputers in the world! Such leadership-class system will support European researchers, industry and public sector, in better understanding and responding to complex challenges and transforming them into innovation opportunities in sectors like health, weather forecasting or urban and rural planning."
Anders Dam Jensen, Executive Director, EuroHPC Joint Undertaking
“We can be proud about the fact that the LUMI supercomputer in CSC’s data center in Kajaani Finland will lift Europe back to the forefront of high-performance computing. The joint procurement process together with the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and ten European countries has proceeded on schedule despite the global pandemia, thanks to the vast know-how of the LUMI consortium and the excellent collaboration. The astonishing computing power of LUMI combined with a very modern artificial intelligence platform and data management infrastructure will help European researchers to tackle with unforeseen research questions.“
Kimmo Koski, Managing Director of CSC
“The reliability of CSC and Finland made the European Commission and ten partner countries to invest in one pan-European high-performance computing and data management infrastructure in Finland. We have to keep up the excellent collaboration in order to maximize this investment to benefit society on a larger scale.”
Anita Lehikoinen, Permanent Secretary from Ministry of Education and Culture, Finland
“The technology we are using is strongly based on mathematical modelling: analyses, artificial intelligence, simulations and optimization. Therefore, powerful computing capacity and data management infrastructure is of utmost importance for us. The LUMI infrastructure will open up totally new possibilities for us which we may exploit“
Anna-Maria Henell, CEO of Disior Ltd.
