Elmer is an open source multiphysical simulation software mainly developed by CSC. Elmer includes physical models of fluid dynamics, structural mechanics, electromagnetics, heat transfer and acoustics, for example. These are described by partial differential equations which Elmer solves by the Finite Element Method (FEM). Parallel scalability of Elmer has been demonstrated up to thousands of processors. Elmer development was started in 1995 but only after it's open source publication in 2005, the use and development of Elmer has become international. Currently Elmer is used by thousands of researchers around the world.

The intent of the tutorial is to give an overview of Elmer demonstrating its use both on a workstation with a GUI and on a supercomputer platform using the same case. Special emphasis will be given to the parallel techniques of Elmer.

This tutorial is organized as a part of the PARA 2012 conference but it is open for anyone interested, not requiring participation to the conference. There are also three Elmer related contributed presentations on the conference.

Program

Below is the preliminary rough program of the course. There will be full three hours of lectures and demonstrations while the last optional hour will go hands-on. A detailed program will follow later.

The tutorial will be given in a demonstration mode but those who are interested may install Elmer on their laptops and may thereby follow some of the steps.
