GÉANT GN4

GÉANT GN4

Research and Education Networking

In the networking area, CSC participates in GÉANT's GN4 project as a member of NORDUnet (Nordic Infrastructure for Research and Education). GÉANT is the pan-European research and education network that interconnects Europe's National Research and Education Networks (NRENs). GÉANT connects over 50 million users at 10 000 institutions across Europe, supporting all scientific disciplines. The backbone network operates at speeds of up to 500Gbps and reaches over 100 national networks worldwide.

Since its establishment over 20 years ago, the GÉANT network has developed progressively to ensure that European researchers lead international and global collaboration. Over 1000 terabytes of data is transferred via the GÉANT IP backbone every day. More than just an infrastructure for e-science, it stands as a positive example of European integration and collaboration.

Funet network and services for CSC's customers

GÉANT's backbone network is central and essential part of the Funet (Finnish University and Research Network) research network. Funet provides its member organisations with high-speed access to the Internet and worldwide research networks. In the GN4 project, the Funet network and related services, such as user identity management, are developed in order to keep the Funet network in the forefront of research networks for Finnish researchers. This enhances e.g. the possibilities for data-intensive global research for Finnish researchers.

Collaboration with GÉANT keeps CSC in the forefront of developing services for the Finnish customers. In the field of Trust and Identity, CSC works on legal issues, dissemination and new technology. CSC is taking part in the development of the Eduroam Service and SDN/NFV technologies. In the field of video conferences, CSC is working on web-based real-time communications services.
