On-Demand Extremes DT Phase 2

Destination Earth On-Demand Extremes Digital Twin

Weather-induced extreme events have become more frequent and intense. Thus, it has become urgent to improve our abilities to anticipate their impacts. Destination Earth On-Demand Extremes Digital Twin (DT) is a solution for on-demand forecasting of environmental extremes at the sub-km scale. The On-Demand Extremes DT aims to provide an on-demand workflow with co-design of high-resolution predictions about extreme weather events utilising the EuroHPC computing facilities. This will support decision-makers in impact sectors such as flooding, agriculture, health and energy meteorology in rapidly responding to meteorological, hydrological, and air quality extremes.

The On-Demand Extremes DT core software system will be developed in four parts. Firstly, the work on code adaptation needed for running on hybrid CPU and accelerator architectures will be continued. Secondly, the modelling system will be further adapted for running on a sub km grid scale in an efficient on-demand setup. The work on optimisation of On-Demand Extremes prototype system will be continued to make all configurations running efficiently. Tailor-made modules targeted on impact-modelling will be implemented. Thirdly, the project will work on post-processing of the model output, so that this can be distilled into a limited number of variables essential for end-users including uncertainty quantification for these variables. The approaches will be tailor-made for the specific targeted types of extreme events. Fourthly, workflow management tools and scripting for the core software will be further developed.

As part of the project, CSC will provide expertise in extreme scale computation which is a prerequisite of contemporary forecasting. The workflow core computations will be executed on the EuroHPC infrastructure as provided through the supercomputers LUMI hosted by CSC and Leonardo hosted by CINECA.
