INAR Ecosystems

INAR Ecosystems is a national collaboration of terrestrial ecosystem and biodiversity research organizations and data management centres. It is complementing the Finnish Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) in improving the research infrastructures for in forests, peatlands, agricultural fields and urban areas. The activities of INAR Ecosystems include upgrading research infrastructures at various ecosystem observation stations and experimental stations and laboratories, coordination of their national activities and creation of deeper co-within ecosystem research in Finland.

Simulating Antarctic marine ice sheet stability and multi-century contributions to sea level rise

Understanding and predicting the behaviour of the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) on decadal to centennial time scales is of global importance to policy decisions, mainly due high uncertainty in the AIS contribution to sea level change. Significant regions of the AIS rest on bedrock below sea level and may be vulnerable to Marine Ice Sheet Instability (MISI), a mechanism for rapid and potentially irreversible discharge of ice. Due to large uncertainty as to which basins are vulnerable to MISI, and how rapid their unstable retreat might be, even the sign of the contribution of the AIS to sea level rise remains uncertain according to the fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

eSTICC – Science Tools for Investigating Climate Change at High Northern Latitudes

The world is experiencing climate change, and this is particularly evident in the polar regions. Scientists are in need of tools for measuring, predicting and evaluating these changes in order to better understand them. The eSTICC center brings together experts in climate and computing to collaborate on advancing precisely such tools. Researchers at the center will collect observational data relating to greenhouse gas emissions, among other things, storing this information in existing databases to make it more readily accessible, and more easily integrated into, existing data.
