Advanced materials research and development is essential for a sustainable future and a competitive Europe. Innovative materials are required to address climate change, technological progress, and resource scarcity. However, fragmentation in materials science and engineering limits collaboration and slows innovation.

MaterialsCommons will enable cross‑sector collaboration and provide broad access to materials and process data. It delivers a machine‑actionable, distributed ecosystem with a user‑friendly web entry. The platform connects materials discovery, synthesis, and manufacturing communities. Common schemas, terminologies, taxonomies, and ontologies create a shared language. The framework integrates existing workflows and tools into interoperable, FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) systems. This ensures reproducible and machine‑actionable data across the development chain. Six industrial use cases validate solutions for real user needs. Sustainability mechanisms ensure continuation of the infrastructure beyond the project.

The project reduces fragmentation, accelerates innovation, and improves data accessibility. It enables efficient data sharing, reuse, and integration across sectors. This supports faster materials discovery and industrial deployment. The outcome strengthens European competitiveness and advances sustainable technologies.

CSC contributes to high‑performance computing (HPC) integration and data infrastructure and acts as a link to EuroHPC Federated Platform. In Work Package 7 (WP7) CSC contributes to the HPC compatibility of the universal application programming interface. In WP8, CSC develops data access protocols and co‑leads optimisation on EuroHPC systems. In WP11, CSC contributes to identity and access management and common deployment solutions aiming for a  scalable, secure, and interoperable service. Together with VTT as the other Finnish partner, we work to facilitate adopting data driven technologies, powered by HPC capacity to boost industrial R&D in Finland.
