Abstract

The huge amount of available data and its fast growing pace in the life sciences requires professionals to learn and adapt continously to keep abreast with new technologies and methodologies. More and more computational researchers work on essential areas such as medical diagnosis and treatment, drug discovery, agriculture or food industry. High quality training and available frameworks for professional development are key to enable researchers to use computational tools in this constantly evolving scenario.

A competency framework can be used to define the areas of training needs and to develop a training programme. Professionals can use the competencies to assess themselves against a established standard and identify development areas for themselves. A competency is an observable ability of any professional, integrating multiple components such as knowledge, skills and behaviours. BioExcel has developed a framework that lists the competencies for professionals in the field of computational biomolecular research and includes different profiles within its field of application, e.g. computational chemist, PhD student in biomolecular simulations.

The EMBL-EBI Competeny Hub supports continuous professional development by facilitating the identification of training needs and the access to relevant training resources. The tool allows the association of career profiles and training resources with the competencies, so that users can find where to start learning. In this webinar, we will demonstrate how to use the BioExcel competency framework to guide professional development.
