Enhancing Digital Preservation Strategies at European and National Level

Costs and physical limitations of storage and service capacity lead to the difficult question of what is worthy of long-term preservation. There are some guidelines and frameworks, such as digital preservation certification tools, and discipline-specific practices, but there is an uneven distribution of awareness and implementation of preservation practices and standards.

EOSC EDEN will establish a framework to identify digital data candidates for long-term preservation through assessments of the usage, quality and benefits of data to science and society. The project will also create a model for re-appraisal points in data life cycle and support the development of sustainable curation and preservation strategies in Europe. Key components of the project include building a registry to mainstream tools and services from trustworthy repositories and long-term archives into the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).

Moreover, the project will enhance and develop new services to automate preservation and curation actions and identify standards and protocols to submit and exchange candidate packages for long-term preservation. To ensure the adoption and long-term sustainability of the results, EOSC EDEN will engage and collaborate with multiple stakeholders.

Additionally, EOSC EDEN will work to boost data curation and quality practices in Europe by creating awareness of the benefits and by enhancing skills in the area. In particular, the project will establish an expert curation network and explore its sustainability as part of the European Network of Trustworthy Digital Repositories that the FIDELIS project will establish.

The EOSC EDEN consortium brings together participants with extensive expertise in digital preservation, data quality, curation, and FAIR data management and services. CSC, which delivers national digital preservation services in Finland, coordinates the EOSC EDEN project. CSC ensures effective project administration, sustainability and strategic alignment.
