NordicQCI

Nordic Quantum Communication Infrastructure

The NordicQCI project is a key step towards the implementation of quantum-secured communication across national borders in the Nordic countries. Its main objective is to protect critical public infrastructures by securing their communications and data, particularly those that cross national borders and serve multiple Member States. The project’s goal is to establish cross-border quantum-secured connections between Estonia-Finland and Finland-Sweden, ensuring reliable and resilient transmission of sensitive communications and data between public authorities, research organizations, and critical infrastructures.

Advancing Quantum‑Secure Cross‑Border Communications

The implementation of the terrestrial cross-border links will take place over the submarine cables connecting Tallinn, Helsinki, Åland islands and Stockholm. Additionally, this project will facilitate the integration of Nordic quantum networks with the EuroQCI’s Space Segment via an Optical Ground Station ( OGS ) in Stockholm, demonstrating the Eagle-1 satellite’s capabilities in the Nordic environment.

The NordicQCI project will build upon and benefit from work and implementations carried out in the DEP EuroQCI National projects ( 2023-2025 ) for national domains in Estonia, Finland and Sweden.

The NordicQCI project represents a crucial step towards the development of a pan-European quantum communication infrastructure, laying the foundation for quantum-secure connectivity to the EuroQCI backbone network through both fiber and satellite links. Therefore, the project strengthens the security and crisis resilience in Estonia, Finland and Sweden.

Aligned with the objectives of the EUROQCI-WORKS call, NordicQCI will enable quantum-secure connections for various applications, strengthening the technological quantum ecosystem in the Nordic countries. It will support the testing, operation and management of an integrated terrestrial and satellite-based quantum communication network. CSC contributes to NordicQCI by providing expertise and infrastructure for encrypted cross-border connections secured by quantum key distribution (QKD) and use cases to transfer sensitive research data from Finland to Estonia and Sweden.
