The Time Machine Project
The Time Machine Project is a European initiative leveraging big data, AI, and digitization to reconstruct the past in unprecedented detail. Time Machine is tasked with creating a collective digital information system that maps the European economic, social, cultural, and geographical evolution. It aims to transform vast historical records—maps, texts, and artifacts—into a dynamic digital information system, enabling advanced research in history, cultural heritage, and urban development. A part of this is creating the "Big Data of the Past" that digitises European history.
The project supports innovation in education, tourism, smart cities, and creative industries. Time Machine fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across Europe and beyond with a network of more than 700 organizations from over 50 countries, including academic and research organisations, cultural heritage, civil society and GLAM institutions and private enterprises. CSC's membership in Time Machine supports cultural heritage organizations' possibilities of joining international projects.
