PEAT-GENIE
Simulating Management Decisions with Peatland Digital Twins and Generative AI
Large-scale initiatives such as Destination Earth (DestinE) and Research Infrastructures (RIs) generate vast volumes of high-quality observational and simulation data. However, their usability and accessibility remain limited, particularly for non-technical users, due to fragmented toolchains, technical barriers, and the lack of intuitive interfaces.
PEAT-GENIE develops a modular, interoperable, and inclusive AI platform that transforms complex environmental data into decision-ready insights through natural language interaction, visual scenario simulation, and local impact assessments. By integrating data from RIs, Copernicus Earth Observation, DestinE components (e.g., Climate DT, Data Lake), and national sources, the platform will power AI-driven Digital Twins for peatland ecosystems, delivering robust predictions for hydrology, GHG flux, biodiversity, and land cover. Two Generative AI interfaces—a “what-if” simulation engine and a multilingual explanation tool—will provide inclusive, transparent, and expertise-sensitive access to environmental models. Uncertainty quantification and provenance tracking will be embedded to ensure interpretability and build trust in the outputs.
Validated in real-world pilot sites across four EU countries, PEAT-GENIE offers a scalable, cross-sectoral blueprint for climate resilience, ecological restoration, and AI-powered environmental governance—fully aligned with the European Green Deal, GenAI4EU, the EU Biodiversity Strategy, and the AI Act. Beyond peatlands, the platform’s modular architecture, FAIR-compliant data pipelines, and GenAI interfaces are designed for reusability across ecosystems. Co-designed with end-users, the platform’s tools, models, and outputs will be openly available, enabling future integration into DestinE services, RI catalogues, and the AI-on-Demand platform. PEAT-GENIE will thus strengthen Europe’s capacity for inclusive, trustworthy, and actionable environmental intelligence.
CSC supports platform integration, validation, deployment, and interoperability with DestinE services. CSC also provides expertise and uptake of developments from previous and ongoing European digital twin initiatives, including Climate DT, BioDT, and TerraDT. CSC helps ensure that PEAT-GENIE’s services are interoperable, sustainable, and capable of supporting advanced environmental modelling and decision-making.
