Adaptive Strategies Towards Expedient Recovery in eXascale

ASTERIX aims to protoype, evaluate and implement a lossy restart algorithm for Vlasiator – the world’s most accurate near-Earth space simulation. This massive parallel simulation addresses the global 3-dimensional (3D) solar wind – magnetosphere – ionosphere system at ion-kinetic accuracy.

The algorithm will improve the time to solution, reduces use of memory, makes more efficient use of the computational grant budget, and increases resilience of the simulation running in a supercomputer.

It is also possible that the algorithm can open a new avenue in space plasma physics because it allows more efficient scientific analysis of the velocity distribution functions (VDFs). The algorithm may even lead to an AI-based representation of the velocity space, which may, in time, lead to real-time solutions based on ion-kinetic description. The algorithm also encourages the transition to exascale computations as it is reliant on use of graphics processing units (GPUs).

Once the most viable algorithm is selected from the prototyped algorithms, its efficient parallel implementation at scale within a supercomputer is started. CSC will be carrying out the parallel implementation using the LUMI supercomputer.
