Open Researcher and Contributor ID

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a global, non-profit organization that provides unique, persistent identifiers for researchers and scholars. ORCID provides three main services for researchers that promote transparency, connection, and trust: the ORCID iD (a unique, persistent identifier free of charge for researchers), the ORCID record that is connected to the ORCID iD, as well as a set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and interrelated services.

Integrated with publishers, funders, and research institutions, ORCID enables seamless data exchange, reducing administrative burdens and improving visibility. Researchers can link their ORCID iD to professional profiles, grant applications, and institutional repositories, ensuring accurate and verifiable records of their contributions. ORCID is widely used across academia, government, and industry, making it a vital tool for modern research management.

In the Finnish scope Orcid iD is the identifier widely used to identify researchers and their output. It is utilised in the CRIS-systems of the universities, in various funder's grant management systems, and in the Research.fi.

In addition to being a premium member, CSC is the lead and coordinator of the Finnish National Orcid Consortium with the responsibility to for example collect yearly membership fees and pay them to ORCID.
