The Pro Kainuu achievement award is granted for meritorious activity on behalf of the visibility and positive renown of the area of Kainuu, Finland.

The LUMI supercomputer, which has also won multiple awards internationally, was seen to have raised the profile of Kainuu as a centre of high technology and as a forerunner in sustainable development.

– Cooperation between Kainuu and CSC indicates that here in Kainuu we can reach heights that are fully consistent with the goals that we have set for ourselves. The work has certainly not ended here. In Europe it has now been recognised that our excellence and our vision is already directed at global cooperation and the opportunities that it brings, observed Jukka-Pekka Partanen, Director of the Kajaani data center when he accepted the award.

The winner of the Pro Kainuu achievement award was selected by the Kainuu Regional Government after hearing the recommendations of a panel of experts.

Also presented at the event was this year’s annual Pro Kainuu recognition award, which was granted to the Ristajärven Pyry sport club. For the first time the Pro Kainuu recognition award for youth was also presented. The winner was nature photographer Ville Heikkinen from Kuhmo.

In November 2021 LUMI won the HPCwire Editors’ Choice Award for the Best Sustainability Innovation in HPC at the annual Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards of HPCWire magazine. The award was presented at the SC21 Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, in the United States.

LUMI got another international award at the global DCD Awards gala in London in December last year when LUMI was given the Data Center Design Innovation Award together with Granlund and Synopsis Architects. A record number of competitors vied for the DCD Awards this year: hundreds of applications were submitted from 35 countries on six different continents.

In addition, the LUMI data center project received an award in May 2022 as the Innovative Project of the Year in the Electrical Review and Data Centre Review Excellence Awards in London.
