The student cluster competition is an intensive 48-hour competition in which student teams around the world independently solve demanding high-performance computing problems with a cluster of less than four kilowatts. The competition has been held since 2007 and is a prestigious showcase for future high-performance computing experts.

The Finnish team is called Team Löyly. This team, assembled and trained by CSC, consists of six students from the University of Helsinki and Aalto University. A team with a multidisciplinary background is ready to take on future challenges.

The team members are

  • Kim Takala (University of Helsinki)
  • Hex Sun (University of Helsinki)
  • Camilla Kontto (University of Helsinki)
  • Sara Vakkilainen (University of Helsinki)
  • Matteo Murdaca (Aalto University)
  • Santeri Toivonen (University of Helsinki)

The team’s advisors are Jussi Enkovaara and Leopekka Saraste at CSC. CSC’s team has entered the easier virtual IndySCC competition twice before and this is the first time a Finnish team has entered the main competition. Two years ago, Leopekka Saraste was competing for the first CSC team.

“We have had regular trainings with the team since spring, and I’m positive we are ready for the actual tasks in the competition. The students have learned basic concepts about high performance computing and practiced how to run the various benchmarks and scientific applications of the competition. During the final stretch we have worked extensively with the actual competition cluster and focused more also on the system administration aspects,” said Jussi Enkovaara.

Get to know the team and follow the competition events through the team’s own Instagram account and CSC’s Instagram account. The competition will be held from 18 November to 30 November.
