Biodiversity DTs Technology Readiness Assessment for DestinE
Biodiversity Digital Twins (Components) Technology Readiness Assessment for Destination Earth
DestinE is an EU initiative aiming to create a high-precision digital twin (DT) of the Earth to monitor, simulate, and better predict climate change. Recent attempts to develop biodiversity digital twins are pushing the boundaries for understanding and predicting biodiversity patterns and processes.
Biodiversity Digital Twins (Components) Technology Readiness Assessment for Destination Earth will conduct an analysis of the recent European initiatives that have developed digital twins, tools and simulation codes for the biodiversity community focusing on identifying digital twins that are on the minimum stage of system prototype demonstration in operational environment (Technical Readiness Level of 7). The objective is twofold:
- provide a detailed evaluation of whether the biodiversity digital twins and related components are ready for integration in DestinE ecosystem from the technical and policy perspective
- provide ECMWF with a high-level roadmap on the technological and governance requirements to support integration with DestinE.
The integration of digital twins of marine and terrestrial biodiversity will enable the DestinE system to provide actionable insights for biodiversity conservation and sustainable policies as well as to advance prediction tools in the biodiversity area.
CSC as the prime contractor will leverage the technical developments and knowledge matured during a set of EU-funded projects, including BioDT, DTO-BioFlow, TerraDT as well as the Climate Change Adaptation DT. As the only contractor, CSC is responsible for the management and implementation of all activities. This includes the identification and technical and operational assessment of the relevant biodiversity digital twins as well as the analysis and mapping of the policy and governance landscape. CSC will produce a roadmap of the efforts needed to achieve a Technical Readiness Level 8 – system completed and qualified, if not yet achieved, to ensure the readiness of relevant biodiversity digital twins to be included into DestinE.
