GoE

Genome of Europe

The Genome of Europe (GoE) project aims to establish a unique pan-European reference database comprising a minimum of 100,000 genomes representative of the European population, in alignment with the 1+ Million Genomes initiative.

The project’s key objectives include:

  • Implementing a pan-European community of practice that will generate the reference genome through integration of existing genome datasets and de novo sequencing across diverse national populations.
  • Defining the ethical, legal and societal frameworks necessary for generating and sharing the reference genome.
  • Ensuring data security, and making the GoE data available within the Digital Europe Programme-funded Genomic Data Infrastructure

The GoE project is highly relevant for genetic-phenotypic discoveries, supporting national genome programs, and integration of genomics into the European Health Data Space (EHDS). Its synergy with other European initiatives enhances its impact for personalised medicine. Moreover, the project activities align with broader scientific and healthcare goals including the European competitiveness in genomic research and innovation.

GoE encompasses partners across 27 European countries. CSC is participating in GoE as an Affiliated Entity of the University of Helsinki who is in charge of collecting the genomic data in Finland. CSC is ensuring that the data is securely stored, found and accessed within the 1+ Million Genomes data infrastructure. More specifically, CSC is working on identifying infrastructure gaps and implementing advanced use cases, while ensuring seamless data flow across national nodes.
