The key objective of NeIC in 2025 is to promote national digital infrastructure strategies. This is done, among other things, by strengthening the exchange of information between national service providers, by developing cooperation networks and by supporting the development of expertise among experts working with infrastructures.

”During 2025, we will begin strategy work for 2025-2030 together with the NeIC Strategic Committee. In the context of strategy work, we are exploring new opportunities, such as extended cooperation in high-performance computing and quantum technology in the Nordic countries,” says Malkiewicz, who started his work as Interim Director of NeIC at the beginning of January.

NeIC and its partners have already demonstrated how joint investments in research infrastructures can deliver significant benefits. For example, providing researchers with access to state-of-the-art computing resources such as the LUMI supercomputer can solve complex challenges such as the effects of climate change or major scientific problems.

This Nordic expertise is now also offered for international use.

Through NeIC, we are involved in global research collaboration. This allows us to strengthen the voice of the Nordic and Baltic countries in international networks and to highlight the expertise and innovations of our region.

”Through NeIC, we are involved in global research collaboration. This allows us to strengthen the voice of the Nordic and Baltic countries in international networks and to highlight the expertise and innovations of our region,” summarizes Malkiewicz.

Common infrastructures call for extensive cooperation

One of the biggest challenges facing the Nordic digital research infrastructure is sustainability and financial continuity. Stable and predictable funding is essential to develop, maintain and expand the infrastructure to meet the rapidly growing need.

At the same time, the importance of digital infrastructures is emphasized in an increasing number of disciplines, such as health research, climate science and artificial intelligence. This creates new opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration and resource sharing, which can boost innovation development and strengthen the impact of infrastructure in the research community.

”The existing digital research infrastructure in the Nordic and Baltic countries enables extensive cooperation on topics with a strong Nordic foundation – such as social structures, trust and a common historical background,” Malkiewicz says.

CSC actively involved in the activities of NeIC

CSC has been involved in NeIC since its beginning in 2012. From the beginning of 2025, CSC is NeIC’s host organization, and acts as a supporting and coordinating entity for NeIC’s governance, which is responsible for legal and administrative support. Active participation in NeIC strengthens CSC’s position in the Nordic countries and deepens its role in regional research cooperation.

For NeIC, this will enable deeper participation in Nordic co-operation and develop platforms and services with the Nordic and Baltic countries that support research, education and innovation in the digital environment.

”During my term, I want to maintain where NeIC is at its best: in promoting relevant and innovative development projects, e.g. developing a common Nordic platform for quantum computing, and in strengthening the organization’s heritage and core values, such as collaboration and trust,” Malkiewicz concludes.

Headshot.

Nordic e-Infrastructure Collaboration, NeIC

NeIC develops platforms and services that support research, education and innovation in the digital environment. The organization consists of experts from Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Estonia.

NeIC services enable researchers and organizations in the Nordic and Baltic countries to access state-of-the-art computing resources, data management systems, and fast and efficient network connections. The aim is to support researchers in the efficient use of e-infrastructure. In addition, NeIC promotes Nordic cooperation in digital research infrastructures by supporting both Nordic and wider societal research.
