EUSAiR Project – Toward AI Regulatory Sandboxes
CSC is participating in the EUSAiR project, which aims to promote the implementation of regulatory sandboxes for Artificial Intelligence in EU countries. Funded by the European Commission, the project creates controlled environments where innovative AI systems can be tested and validated before entering the market.
By supporting and coordinating the deployment of regulatory sandboxes, EUSAiR ensures access for AI innovators, particularly SMEs and startups. This helps companies reduce compliance costs with new regulations and makes market entry more sustainable.
CSC leads one of the three pilot projects that will test the effectiveness of the EUSAiR Sandbox Framework and Operational Sandbox Scheme in a secure environment. Furthermore, CSC contributes to developing the Union AI Sandbox Framework, designing models for national authorities, and ensuring compatibility with existing high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure.
“AI regulatory sandboxes are an important tool to accelerate the development of AI applications on demanding areas. Sandboxes need to be integrated into wider AI development environments to unleash their full potential. Central goal for CSC is to ensure that sandboxes are seamlessly integrated into national computing environments and the upcoming LUMI AI services,” said Aleksi Kallio, Director of LUMI AI Factory Services.
The project is built around Europe’s supercomputing centers, with key participants from Italy (ICSC), Spain (BSC), and Finland (CSC). It brings together 13 partners from seven European countries and is coordinated by the University of Bologna, Italy. From Finland, the participants include CSC – IT Center for Science, the University of Turku, and Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences.
