Spatial data analysis with R
This online course, offered by CSC – IT Center for Science, is designed to give participants a solid foundation in spatial data analysis using R. It is intended for beginners with basic knowledge of geoinformatics, geostatistics, and R programming — no prior experience with R spatial packages is required. The course draws on open course materials available on GitHub and makes use of CSC’s Noppe service, allowing participants to run RStudio directly in a web browser without any local installations. Over the course, participants will gain hands-on experience through lecturematerials and exercises covering key topics including handling and visualizing vector and raster data, spatial operations, spatial analysis techniques such as clustering and autocorrelation, map algebra, and spatial modelling.
Topics of the course:
- Handling and plotting vector data in R
- Spatial operations (intersection, clipping, conversions etc)
- Spatial analysis of vector data (clustering, density surfaces, autocorrelation)
- Visualizing spatial data
- Raster basics with R
- Raster data manipulation
- Map algebra
- Spatial modelling with raster data
Prerequisites:
- Basics of geoinformatics and geostatistics
- Basic use of R, no earlier experience with R spatial packages is needed. For self-study Data analysis with R course material can be used.
