CSC

In the Nordic region, the service will be deployed in Finland, Sweden, and Denmark. In addition to upgraded network connections, the service includes comprehensive support, monitoring, and cybersecurity arrangements. The research network will connect leading computing centers in the region, including EuroHPC’s LUMI supercomputer located in CSC’s data center in Kajaani, Finland and later the EuroHPC LUMI-AI supercomputer and LUMI-IQ quantum computer, as well as Sweden’s Arrhenius supercomputer. The implementation is a collaborative effort between NORDUnet and the national research network operators: CSC – IT Center for Science (Finland), DeiC (Denmark), and Sunet (Sweden).

The network will operate at terabit-level speeds, marking a significant leap in the performance of Europe’s research infrastructure. The network’s high data transfer capacity enables seamless use of demanding applications such as modeling, artificial intelligence, and simulation across Europe. Strong cybersecurity measures ensure the protection of research data, even when transferred across borders. By integrating national and regional supercomputers into a unified system and offering broad access to data sources, the network facilitates efficient use of EuroHPC services. Moreover, it is designed to adapt to future needs and support the integration of emerging technologies as part of Europe’s expanding supercomputing ecosystem.

€60 million agreement to strengthen European research infrastructure

GÉANT was selected as the service provider through an open call for tenders. The agreement, valued at up to €60 million, covers the design, construction, and maintenance of the network over a four-year period.

Initial installations will begin in the coming months, with services gradually becoming available starting in 2026. The system will be expanded in phases to cover all EuroHPC supercomputers, including associated AI and quantum computing centers. This will enable researchers, public authorities, and businesses across Europe to access EuroHPC resources quickly and securely.

More information is available on the GÉANT website and in the EuroHPC JU press release.
