Meetings and coding on Children’s Day at Work – CSC fosters a family-friendly workplace
At CSC, we want to build a work culture that supports balancing work and family life. At the end of November, we joined once again the Children’s Day at Work, bringing more than 100 children to explore their parents’ workplace at our offices in Espoo and Kajaani.
The day began with a warm welcome from CSC’s leadership representative Mari Walls, followed by a hybrid meeting connecting children in Espoo and Kajaani. During two meetings, children enthusiastically brainstormed mascot animals and names for potential future supercomputers. They arrived on time, voted boldly for their favorites, and winners were chosen fairly and efficiently. The next CSC supercomputer just might be called Kipinä (Spark in English) with an eagle owl as its mascot!

The program also included a coding school, arts and crafts, games, snacks, and hot chocolate. In Espoo, children solved an office quest, while in Kajaani they explored the data center and peeked inside the LUMI supercomputer.
This year, CSC also piloted a new initiative, An Afternoon for Important People. Employees’ adult near and dear ones had the opportunity to hear from Deputy CEO Tiina Kupila-Rantala about CSC’s operations, ask questions, and learn more about their loved one’s work.
Family-friendliness in CSC’s everyday work
Children’s Day at Work and the Afternoon for Important People are examples showing that CSC wants to value employees as individuals with full lives beyond work.
At CSC, we have a positive approach to flexible work arrangements. Also, we strive to enable part-time work when needed. In addition, CSC’s flexible working hours and remote work practices make it easier to balance work and family in daily life.
“We want to ensure that balancing work and family is possible at CSC in different career stages and life situations. Good communication and collaboration are key to flexible arrangements,” says Hanna Leimola, Director of the People and Culture unit at CSC.
CSC also participates in the Work and Family in Kainuu project (2024–2026), which develops family-friendly practices in the Kainuu region.
